This paper reviews those models and pinpoints the main features that grant them certain explanatory capabilities, such as stratification, connectivity and distributed representation of linguistic elements. Several models have been proposed since Weinreich (1953/1974) laid the foundations of language contact studies. The way in which bilinguals process linguistic information has received increasing attention in the last decades.
